4.1. Methodological overview

  • The methodology followed in this course is oriented towards the achievement of the learning objectives. 
  • Students are expected to participate actively in the class throughout the semester.
  • Further information regarding the course will be provided on the first day of class.

  • Theoretical lectures.
  • Practical lectures.
  • Individual work.
  • Personal study.
  • Assessment activities.

4.3. Syllabus

The course will address the following topics:

Section I. Greece

1. Polis as political way of life.

2. Aristotle and different politeiai.

3. Stasis between democrats and oligarchs.

4. Concept of law and legal system.

Section II. Republican Rome

1. Polybius’ mixed constitution (Plb. 6.11-18).

2. Democracy in Rome? The debate in the scholarship (Millar vs Hölkeskamp).

3. The constitution of the Roman Republic. The formation of the Roman constitution. Mos maiorum / Tradition and the control of history by the aristocracy. Legitimation of State’s violence.

4. The institutions of the Roman Republic:

- magistrates

- senate

- popular assemblies

5. Oratory in the Roman Republic:

- public speaking at Rome: A question of auctoritas

- the political debate before the people, without the people
